Seton Hall picked up a big early season road win in Iowa City as the Pirates knocked off the Hawkeyes 91-83. The Hall was paced by Freshman guard Myles Powell who has 26 points off the bench, Iowa’s Peter Jok led all scorers with 30 points. The win gives the Big East a 4-3 edge going into the final game tomorrow night between Minnesota and St. John’s. Coming into Thursday night, the Big East had a 3-1 lead and saw it quickly slip away as Providence fell in Columbus to Ohio State and DePaul lost at the empty Allstate Arena to Rutgers in the battle of cellar-dwellers. DePaul-Rutgers aside, the Gavitt Games have been filled with really fun, competitive match-ups. The top game honor has to go to Villanova-Purdue (barring a thriller from Minnesota-St. John’s) who played Monday night in West Lafayette. As a Big East fan and Seton Hall alumnus, it is always fun to see the “true” basketball conference go up against one of the consistent top dogs in the sport. It is a good chance for the Big East to prove their value and show folks that they aren’t a mid-major conference. It still blows my mind that we still have to argue this, but this a power conference. The national championship lives here. Anyways, an overall win in the Gavitt Games would be a huge step forward for the conference, and despite Indiana and Michigan State not partaking this year, there are still plenty of quality wins for the conference. Now if only someone could figure out a way to get Georgetown going…
